Além de performances grandiosas, essa é uma história de empoderamento, de mulheres negras superando duplas barreiras de raça e gênero. Não só elas triunfaram, como em suas jornadas elas se tornaram heroínas na corrida espacial americana contra a Rússia.
Baseado no livro de Margot Lee Shetterly, historicamente fidedigno, o filme conta a história de 3 mulheres americanas negras no início dos anos 1960, que trabalhavam como matemáticas no Centro Langley de Pesquisas da NASA, em Hampton, Virginia, EUA.
O filme é uma interpretação ficcional do livro. Muitos dos detalhes históricos estão preservados, e retratam eventos que desencadearam o início do colapso das barreiras raciais durante um período crucial do Movimentos pelos Direitos Civis.
O filme é rico em preciosidades que inspiram aqueles que batalham pela diversidade e a inclusão no mercado de trabalho.

1 – Eliminar obstáculos para seus funcionários.
Quando Al Harrison sacou que sua funcionária, a matemática negra Katherine Goble, tinha que caminhar 1/2 hora a cada vez que precisava ir ao banheiro para negros, ele usa um pé-de-cabra para arrebentar a placa que identifica o único banheiro reservado para mulheres negras, e solta a frase “here at NASA we all pee the same color!” Ao fazer isso, ele remove de forma eficaz esse grave obstáculo para facilitar o trabalho de Katherine. E, como frequentemente acontece, ao identificar e consertar o problema para uma pessoa, ele removeu um obstáculo que impactava um grande número de pessoas talentosas.
2 – Lutar para ser mais abrangente para ganhar acesso a um maior banco de talentos.
O envolvimento dos Estados Unidos na 2ª Guerra Mundial criou uma enorme demanda por mão de obra especializada para o setor de Defesa. As mulheres começaram a ser recrutadas na NASA, em 1935, mas em 1943 a necessidade por talentos beirou o desespero. Dois anos antes, o presidente Roosevelt assinou a lei Executive Order 8802, que acabava com a segregação na indústria da defesa. Isso abriu a porta da NASA que passou a incluir mulheres de cor na sua busca por talentos, com resultados espetaculares.
3 – Ousar a ser o “primeiro” a desbravar novos caminhos.
Numa das cenas mais poderosas do filme, Mary Jackson (Janelle Monáe) precisa da permissão de um juiz para frequentar aulas numa escola de engenharia para brancos – numa época em que no estado Virginia a lei da segregação entre brancos e negros ainda dominava. Apesar das monumentais adversidades contra ela, ela pergunta ao juiz: “De todos os casos que o senhor vai ouvir hoje, qual deles fará o senhor ser o primeiro?” Não importa o quanto hercúlea seja a tarefa, você não deveria ter medo de ser o primeiro, e você deveria apoiar aqueles na sua equipe que tem desejos de trilhar novos caminhos.
4 – Pequenos gestos contribuem muito para criar um senso de pertencimento.
Quando a equipe de astronautas visita a NASA, todos os funcionários estão perfilados ao ar livre para cumprimentá-los, com as mulheres negras relegadas lá para o final da fila. O infeliz comentário do coronel Johnson suscita um forte reação da parte de Katherine Goble. Sua fraca tentativa de se desculpar só piora as coisas. Mais tarde, então ele retorna com um sincero pedido de desculpas e finalmente ganha o coração de Katherine.
