Tenho uma explicação que me parece muito simples: bric-à-brac é o cotidiano antigo. Estamos falando de artigos como latas de bolacha, litros de leite, bijuterias de época, cinzeiros de hotéis, bonecas, brinquedos, roupas, canetas, miniaturas, displays de propaganda, canecas comemorativas, chapéus, vidros de perfumes, caixinhas, canivetes. Coisas do dia a dia das famílias de uma determinada época. Objetos que, por seu design marcadamente referente a um tempo específico, nos fazem “viajar” rapidamente no tempo, suspirar e “festejar: “Ah, na casa da minha avó tinha um igualzinho a esse”. Um suspiro de saudades. Num átimo, uma viagem a cheiros, imagens e às emoções do passado.
Bric-à-brac é diferente de antiguidade. Os objetos antigos que encontramos à venda em antiquários eram, a seu tempo, refinados e caros. Hoje, são mais caros ainda, porque com a passagem do tempo se tornaram mais raros, principalmente se bem conservados, intactos. Assim, uma jóia de mais de 100 anos, em perfeito estado, vale muitas vezes mais por seu estilo e design, que por seu material, digamos ouro e diamantes. O mesmo vale para uma mobília, um espelho, um tapete do início do século passado. Um vaso assinado Lalique.
Contrariamente, o bric-à-brac, não tinha nenhum valor extra a seu tempo. Ganhou seu valor por ter se conservado através dos tempos. Mesmo sendo, na maioria dos casos, objetos feitos de materiais não nobres ou de baixa qualidade. Mas estes pequenos artigos recolhidos do cotidiano guardam um apelo sentimental, decorativo, acima de seu valor intrínseco. A antiguidade de hoje já era cara a seu tempo. O bric era corriqueiro e banal.
